Brunswick Naval Air Station

The Brunswick Naval Air Station (BNAS) is located in the center of the coastal town of Brunswick, Maine

  • Population approximately 22,000
  • Regional service center for Midcoast Maine
  • Home of Bowdoin College
  • One third of Maine's population (415,000 people) lives within 30 miles of the Base
  • Intersects US Route 1 and Interstate 295 (gateway to coastal Maine)
  • Two regional hospitals
  • 30 miles north of the Portland Jetport and the largest tonnage port in New England
  • Less than two hours from Boston

BNAS occupies 3,300 acres (5.15 square miles) which makes up 11.5% of the land mass of Brunswick.

There are over 200 buildings totaling 2 million square feet of commercial and industrial space including warehousing, hangars, office, and maintenance facilities - many less than ten years old.

Hangar 6 is the newest of the Base’s hangar facilities, constructed in 2004. The 174,217 square foot facility contains hangar, maintenance shop and administrative space for 800 employees. The hangar deck has six bays, each capable of handling the 737-800 series aircraft.

The 1,500 acre aviation complex is made up of:

  • Two 8,000 foot runways
  • 500,000 square feet of hangar space
  • 4.5 million square feet of aircraft parking apron space
  • Jet engine test and maintenance facilities
  • Ground support equipment maintenance facilities

There are 1,115 housing units located on and around BNAS - the majority of which have been constructed within the last 5 years, including a 250 room hotel.

Railside access is located across the main gate of BNAS along US Route 1.

BNAS will be closing in September 2011, with military personnel beginning to relocate by the end of 2008, leaving a highly skilled and motivated civilian workforce behind.
